Downhill Marathons: Free Speed, Real Cost

Net-downhill marathons trade elevation for quad damage. Modest drops (CIM, Grandma's) are nearly all upside; extreme ones (REVEL) demand downhill-specific training blocks. Note: all of these count for Boston qualifying, but heavily-dropping courses are not record-eligible.

  1. 1

    REVEL Big Cottonwood

    Salt Lake City, USA · September · 90 m gain · -1490 m net

The extreme end of the downhill-BQ genre: ~1,500 m of descent down Big Cottonwood Canyon. The clock loves it; your quads will not. Downhill-specific training (and humility about the altitude start at ~2,700 m) is mandatory, and the last flat 10K is where unprepared quads file for divorce.

    PR score 9/10
  2. 2

    California International Marathon

    Sacramento, USA · December · 202 m gain · -104 m net

Net downhill (~100 m) from Folsom to the State Capitol, but rolling the whole way — it drops in waves rather than one glide. The relentless gentle rollers reward runners who trained hills; more Boston qualifiers per capita than almost any US race.

    PR score 9/10
  3. 3

    Boston Marathon

    Major

    Boston, USA · April · 248 m gain · -140 m net

Net downhill but deceptively hard: the first 25 km drop steadily and wreck quads that go out too fast, then the Newton hills (km 26–34, capped by Heartbreak Hill) arrive exactly when glycogen runs out. Even splits here means banking restraint, not time.

    PR score 6/10
  4. 4

    Grandma's Marathon

    Duluth, USA · June · 90 m gain · -40 m net

A gently net-downhill cruise along the Lake Superior shore into Duluth. Simple, scenic, and fast — the classic choice for a summer BQ attempt when everything else is too hot.

    PR score 8/10
  5. 5

    Lisbon Marathon

    Lisbon, Portugal · October · 90 m gain · -20 m net

Point-to-point from Cascais along the Atlantic into Lisbon's Praça do Comércio — flat, scenic, and slightly net downhill, with October sun the only real adversary.

    PR score 7/10
  6. 6

    Tokyo Marathon

    Major

    Tokyo, Japan · March · 60 m gain · -38 m net

Gently net-downhill first half through Shinjuku, then flat out-and-back sections along wide avenues. Several 180° turnarounds late require patience, but conditions and surface make this a genuine PR course.

    PR score 8/10
  7. 7

    London Marathon

    Major

    London, United Kingdom · April · 127 m gain · -34 m net

Fast, slightly net-downhill tour of the Thames with the deepest crowds in the sport. The first 5 km drop ~30 m; from there it's flat with grinding cobbled corners around the Tower of London late.

    PR score 8/10
